Back pain affects us all at one point or another and it isn’t something to joke about.

However, the common causes of back pain are avoidable and there are things you can do to ensure that you stay healthy.

1. Weekend activities

If you live a sedentary lifestyle, it’s really easy to injure yourself with weekend activities. Playing with your children or even doing some yard work can see yourself get injured. You can stretch and exercise regularly to avoid further injuries.

2. Improper Lifting Technique

Whether you’re throwing out the trash, picking up boxes, or doing anything else that requires lifting, there is a proper way to do so. You want to do your best to not put an excessive amount of pressure on your back and spine.

Do not attempt to lift by bending forward. Bend your hips and knees to squat down to your load, keep it close to your body, and straighten your legs to lift.

3. Sitting down for long periods of time

Living a sedentary lifestyle has long been considered a bad thing by medical professionals. Not to mention, sitting too much puts stress on the muscles and discs in your back and neck. It also can lead to hip flexor tightness and reduced blood flow to your glutes.

Setting a daily reminder to get up and walk around for a bit is a great start to combat the negative effects of sitting all day.

4. Bad Posture

Having good posture leads to spinal stability and strength. Proper posture keeps bones and joints in the correct alignment so that muscles are being used properly.

When sitting down, sit up with your back straight and your shoulders back. Your buttocks should touch the back of your chair.
